Schtiller & Plevy, Inc., Historic Restoration and Architectural Sheet Metal Contractors for over 25 years, was established in 1920 in Newark, NJ as a Sheet Metal Fabrication Shop. Owned and operated for three generations by members of the Plevy Family, S&P has concentrated their efforts in the New York City Metropolitan area. During this period the Company has increased its reputation for quality workmanship that places them among the top ranks of those contractors who specialize in the accurate refurbishment of structures with historic background.

S&P’s unmatched reputation for quality workmanship and attention to detail is the reason we’ve been selected the Historic Restoration contractor of choice on a wide range of high-visibility projects, from Liberty State Park to Carnegie Hall to Thomas Alva Edison’s New Jersey residence.

Schtiller & Plevy was founded by Isador Plevy, whose own grandfather installed the "skins" of the onion dome churches in Czarist Russia. Isador taught his trade to his sons Morris and Leo. Today, Morris' son Lawrence Plevy has transformed Schtiller & Plevy into one of the most knowledgeable and well known Historical Restoration contractors in the world.

The Company excels in Ornamental and Architectural Sheet Metal Work, and Exterior Facade Restoration. Schtiller & Plevy has extensive experience in Masonry Restoration, Exterior Architectural Woodwork and Historic Painting, taking great pride in the fine detailing of every specific area of a project and the preservation of the historic fabric of an exterior facade. Schtiller & Plevy fabricates and installs standing seam and batten seam roofing in various metals, corrugated metal siding, slate, tile and single-ply roofing systems. The company does custom sheet metal fabrication in its 6,500 square-foot shop.

How we can work with you

As Consultants
Often, S&P is the first company brought onto the project. Working with architects, engineers, planners and conservationists, we have the project experience to inspect, assess and quantify your building’s Historic Restoration needs even prior to drafting plans and soliciting bids. Architects often turn to S&P for advice on materials and techniques.

As Project Managers
Every project is personally overseen by a Plevy family member, and our multi-trade approach results in a better planned renovation, and a smoother running, more economical use of project resources. All projects are approached as a team effort between the architect, S&P and the building owner.

As General Contractors
Whatever the trade requirements, S&P can provide all the artisans, craftsmen and specialists your Historic Restoration project requires. And of course, we are fully bonded.

As an accredited Historic Restoration Contractor, S&P is professionally obligated to point out hidden defects to the owner or architect. An unqualified contractor might not be motivated to do what is in the building’s best interest - the faithful preservation of the buildings ‘historic fabric’ may take a back seat to other considerations.

Safety first and foremost
Safety issues on the jobsite are always first priority, as historic restoration of exterior work often involves dangerous work at great heights, requiring complex scaffolding, rigging, etc. S&P has the wealth of knowledge required to establish and maintain a safe jobsite, protecting the safety of the workers and the general public. Hazardous materials are often a factor in Historic Restoration work, from lead-based paint to asbestos to solvents - their proper handling requires certified experts. S&P is ready to provide that expertise.

All Scthiller & Plevy projects fully comply with the safety guidelines recommended by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

High tech solutions solving old problems
Engineering and building technology have come a long way in a hundred years. Among S&P’s hallmarks is our ability to adapt new high tech solutions to solve structural problems often discovered in many historic buildings, whether due to age or poor engineering... or both. Creative problem-solving as situations arise means we can often improve the overall integrity of the structure to a better-than-new condition, while faithfully preserving the historic exterior.

For an example, during the restoraton of the Hoboken Rail & Ferry Terminal, S&P recommended the installation of expansion joints into the copper facade where there orginally were none (click here), improving upon the original design.
